The Danish Accreditation and Metrology Fund – DANAK

DANAK is a Service Company handling the administration of accreditation and metrology in Denmark based on a contract with The Danish Safety Technology Authority which is part of The Danish Ministry of Economics and Business Affairs.

The Danish Accreditation and Metrology Fund were founded in 2002 by the industry and public authorities and is managed by a Board consisting of representatives from industry, organisations and authorities

The legislation on Accreditation and Metrology is contained in the Law on Industry and Trade Promotion.

DANAK main activities

The primary activities are accreditation and metrology.

Accreditation is assessment of laboratories, certification- and inspection bodies meeting requirements in international standards and thereby competent to carry out specific conformity assessment tasks, ex. calibration of measurement equipment, testing of goods, certification of management systems or inspection activities.

Accredited services are used by industry and public authorities when there is a need for an independent third party assessment to ensure that a company is competent to carry out a specific task.

Metrology is the science of measurement. DANAK informs and guides the industry on the national and international regulation of metrology and assists public authorities in technical matters in relation to legal metrology.

Besides these main activities DANAK is offering approval services in schemes as Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and notification within the field of building construction materials.

To develop DANAK and the market for our services, we are in close dialog with industry and public authorities on their use of metrology and accreditation services, and at present time demands for accreditation and metrology are incorporated into legislation of following Danish ministries: The Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs, the Ministry of Employment, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of the Interior and Health, the Ministry for Science, Technology and Innovation, the Ministry of Taxation and the Ministry of Transport and Energy.

International activities

DANAK is cooperating with a number of international organisations to ensure that Danish regulations and demands in the areas of accreditation and metrology are at an international level and recognised globally.

In the international cooperation for accreditation (EA) (IAF) (ILAC) the purpose is a harmonised interpretation and application of the international standards for accreditation of laboratories, certification and inspection bodies, and global recognition of accredited reports and certificates.

The international activities in the field of metrology are participation in EU work and cooperation with European Cooperation in Legal Metrology (WELMEC) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).
